Phaedra Trethan: Writer, editor, reporter

An old-school journalist with contemporary skill and sensibility.

I have been in journalism for more than two decades, working as a writer, reporter, editor and columnist. My work has appeared in the USA TODAY, the Bergen Record, the Philadelphia Inquirer and Camden/Cherry Hill (NJ) Courier-Post, and includes book reviews, news features, columns, in-depth reporting and narrative writing. In 2017, hoping to adapt in a rapidly contracting industry, I went back to school for the first time in nearly 20 years to learn graphic design, web design and web development. I’m currently enrolled in the Digital Studies program at Rutgers University-Camden.

A brief work history:

  1. 1996-2000: Legal assistant, working for three different Philadelphia law firms specializing in criminal law, wills and estates, corporate and business law, and intellectual property.
  2. 2000-2007: The Philadelphia Inquirer, where I began as an editorial assistant and worked my way up to copy editor and staff writer, working on the Metro, Editorial and Sports desks, writing book reviews, suburban features, a weekly religion roundup and Weekend section features.
  3. 2007-2023: The Courier-Post, where I began on the Sports and Metro copy desks, later working as South Jersey Scene editor (a weekly entertainment tab), assistant new media editor, assistant Metro editor, Metro editor and reporter. In June 2023, I was awarded the USA TODAY How We Live fellowship, enabling me to spend the summer working on a single project detailing a facet of life in South Jersey. I wrote about Camden residents and how they live with a substantial population of homeless people, many of them addicted to drugs, in their neighborhoods.
  4. 2023-present: USA TODAY, where I am a senior reporter. I’ve written human interest pieces, stories about the impact in the United States of the Israel-Hamas conflict, stories about marginalized people and covered breaking news.
